Balance Your Home, Balance Your Life

If your mind is scattered, if your heart hurts, if your soul is yearning, if your body could be in better shape: these can be remedied through acting on the understanding that there is a mutual support network between you and your home. Just as there are layers to the human, there are layers to the home. Look around, and you can recognize how your surroundings mirror you. The home is an outward manifestation of the inward state of its inhabitants. Notice how your home has a personality reflective of yours. How does it express who you are and your state of being?

You can feel how your home elicits certain emotions as you contemplate its condition and the various objects within it. This would be the home’s “emotional body.” How does it make you feel? You will find that the condition of your home generates your typical emotional state. For instance, if your home looks neglected, then guilt will be a predominant emotion for you. Is it a longstanding relationship with guilt, and could it simply be pointing you toward a practical remedy (i.e., cleaning)?

The higher Self always nudges us toward what is in the best interest of the small “s” self.

You can observe how your home triggers the mind and literally sets the stage for mental patterns to play out repeatedly. This would be the home’s “mental body.” What does it say to you? For instance, if your home is full of baby and toddler toys, etc., the mental state will likely be chaotic and in pursuit of diversions while the ego adjusts from self-serving to caregiving. Or perhaps you have a longstanding unhealthy habit, and you will see that you have created the perfect set-up for its perpetuity.

Does your home provide a safe haven for your family, where everyone feels peaceful and loved, or is it a source of stress, boredom, negative patterns? How can we improve the home to improve our circumstances?

Let us imagine, for instance, how a child’s sense of self-importance might revolve partially around the condition of their bedroom. It is an act of love to paint a child’s bedroom walls a color of their choosing (“my opinions matter”), or to give them an air purifier or a few large plants (“my health matters”), a full-length mirror (“my image matters”), a source of music (“my happiness matters”), a plush rug, a warm blanket (“my comfort matters”). Such a child, with all key needs being met, will be a balanced person, emotionally speaking, as a result of conscious parenting efforts. This is a very practical example of how we can work with our physical environment – one step at a time – to transform the state of being and improve the holistic health of the home’s inhabitants. It is an act of self-love and self-respect to do this.
