Ideally, when we step in our front door, we should feel a sense of serenity, like all of the day’s problems and worries have washed down our shoulders and we can settle into the moment. This would be a deeply healing experience, so we make efforts to provide this for ourselves and our loved ones. We focus on cleanliness and order, breathing life into the home, and radiating caring and loving energy. We value ourselves and our loved ones enough to take responsibility in our home by working from one simple question:
What would LOVE do right now?
Love would keep a clean home. There is a sad quality to items being mindlessly placed, a message that seems to say “nobody here cares,” a feeling of worthlessness or being undeserving of cleanliness – and perhaps just deeply ingrained habits perpetuating this experience. It takes self-love and self-respect to keep a space clean.
Love would breathe life into a home. This comes in many forms: opening windows to receive a breeze or natural light, turning music on, lighting a candle or incense, baking a loaf of bread or something that smells good in the oven – even just puttering around the house to move stagnant energy. When we do these things from a place of love, all that we do is healing and nurturing.
Love would care for all that live within the home. This includes not just family or roommates, but pets and plants. Give someone a hug, ask how they are doing. Have some coffee or tea together. Say hello to the pets, stroke the plants and water them if necessary. These acts assure us that we are spending time lovingly, and remind us that we are all connected.
Love would care for the self. We gain a sense of peace and satisfaction by tending to the physical environment and other conscious dwellers in the same space, but we also respect ourselves enough to maintain health and hygiene, and to make time for doing things that we deeply enjoy. Thusly we replenish our spirit.
We see that cleanliness, activity and a sense of aliveness, quality connections and caring are key elements to cultivating serene surroundings that are always pleasant and healing. When we bear LOVE in mind always, the mind, heart and body automatically cohere. We then realize a deep sense of purpose at home just as we do anywhere else. We realize this purpose because we remember that we are here to love, and the actions that flow forth from this state are transformative, and deeply healing.
